The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) kicked off on Monday( 11 November 2024) in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
The primary goal of COP29
The primary goal of COP29 is to bring together countries to develop a shared plan for curbing further global warming.
It would also focus on scaling up climate finance to help developing nations tackle the adverse effects of climate change.
Key Points
Delegates from about 200 countries, business leaders, climate scientists, Indigenous Peoples, journalists, and various other experts and stakeholders are expected to attend the summit, which will last until November 22.
The Event Will Include the sessions -
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29),
The 19th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 19)
The sixth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 6) that will convene to complete the first enhanced transparency framework and the new collective quantified goal on finance, among other matters.
About COP
The COP is the supreme decision-making body of the Convention. All States that are Parties to the Convention are represented at the COP, at which they review the implementation of the Convention and any other legal instruments that the COP adopts and take decisions necessary to promote the effective implementation of the Convention, including institutional and administrative arrangements.
