Bonalu 2025 Kicks Off in Telangana

The vibrant Bonalu festival began on June 26–27, 2025, at Golconda Fort, Hyderabad, launching a month-long celebration honoring Goddess Mahankali. The event combines elaborate rituals, folk performances, and state support, continuing through multiple phases across Telangana’s twin cities.

Key Points:

Grand Opening at Golconda Fort: The inaugural “golden bonam” offering was made at the Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple at Golconda Fort on June 26, followed by celebrations the next day with thousands gathering for worship, Potharaju dance, and drum music.

State Funding & Government Backing: Telangana allocated ?20 crore to support 2,783 Mahankali temples across Hyderabad; minister Konda Surekha personally offered silk robes to the deity.

Festive Schedule Over Weeks: Bonalu rituals will be held on Thursdays and Sundays throughout the Ashada month—June 26, 29; July 3, 6, 10, 13 (Secunderabad), 17, 20 (Old City), and 24 (Lal Darwaza).

Multiple Locations, Shared Spirit: Besides Golconda, key venues include Ujjaini Mahankali Temple (Secunderabad) on July 13–14 and Lal Darwaza in Old City on July 20–21.

Rich Folk Traditions: The festival featured Potharaju dancers, traditional drums, and women carrying earthen pots (bonams) with offerings of rice, jaggery, curd, neem, turmeric, and vermilion.

Safety, Traffic, and Public Comfort: Authorities imposed traffic advisories, increased police presence at Golconda, Langar Houz, and other busy points, and ensured amenities for the large crowds.

Government Welfare Initiatives: Ahead of the festival, a special handicraft exhibition for BC artisans ran from June 25–29 during Bonalu week, highlighting local empowerment.
