IIT Bombay develop needle-free ‘shock’ syringe

A team led by Prof. Viren Menezes from IIT Bombay’s Department of Aerospace Engineering has developed a shockwave-based syringe that delivers medication without piercing the skin with a sharp needle.

  • It uses high-energy shock waves to create a microjet of liquid drugs.
  • This microjet travels at almost twice the speed of a commercial aeroplane during takeoff, penetrating the skin rapidly and gently.
  • Patients barely feel a thing, and the process causes less skin trauma compared to traditional needles.
  • The device, about the size of a ballpoint pen, is equipped with a specially designed nozzle (as fine as a human hair) that ensures both comfort and efficiency during use.
