On April 14, 2025, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the Kalighat Skywalk in Kolkata. The skywalk aims to improve access to the historic Kalighat Kali Temple by providing a safer, faster, and more organized route for pilgrims and visitors.
Key Highlights:
- At 440 meters long and 16 meters high, it is the city's longest elevated pedestrian walkway.
- Connects SP Mukherjee Road directly to the Kalighat Kali Temple, easing congestion and improving visitor flow.
- Features five access points, including locations at Sadananda Road and the Kalighat Fire Station.
- Equipped with lifts, escalators, and staircases to accommodate people of all ages and physical abilities.
- An air-conditioned Hawkers’ Corner with space for 176 vendors has been set up at Hazra Park.
- Part of a broader Kalighat Temple restoration effort in collaboration with the Reliance Group.
- CM Banerjee emphasized fulfilling her earlier pledge to build this skywalk, similar to the one at Dakshineswar.
The Kalighat Skywalk is not just an infrastructural advancement but also a symbol of modern urban planning that respects heritage and community livelihoods.
