EnviStats India 2025: NSO Releases 8th Edition of Environmental Statistics
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has unveiled the eighth edition of "EnviStats India 2025: Environment Statistics," providing a comprehensive overview of India's environmental trends, challenges, and progress.
Key Points:
- Temperature Trends: India's annual mean temperature increased from 25.05°C in 2001 to 25.74°C in 2024, with both minimum and maximum temperatures showing a rising trend.
- Rainfall Variability: Annual rainfall data from 2001 to 2024 indicates significant year-to-year variability due to monsoon patterns, without a clear long-term upward or downward trend.
- Energy Production: Thermal power generation rose from 792,053 GWh in 2013-14 to 1,326,549 GWh in 2023-24. Renewable energy generation also increased significantly, from 65,520 GWh to 225,835 GWh during the same period.
- Fisheries Growth: Inland fish production doubled from 61.36 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 to 139.07 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, reflecting growth in aquaculture.
- Faunal Diversity: India contributes significantly to global faunal diversity, hosting 20,613 marine species, 9,436 freshwater species, and 22,404 soil ecosystem species, totaling 104,561 faunal species out of 1,673,627 globally.
- Environmental Expenditure: In 2021-22, the Environment Sustainability Sector had the highest expenditure share at Rs. 2,433.24 crore. The Conservation of Natural Resource Sector showed an upward trend, while the Agro-Forestry Sector had the lowest expenditure.
- New Data Inclusions: The 2025 edition introduces data on population access to electricity, transport, and sanitation, and includes a list of Ramsar Sites based on expert recommendations.
