Kerala is set to open its first skin bank at the Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on July 15, 2025, coinciding with World Plastic Surgery Day.

The facility aims to provide timely support to burn victims and accident survivors by storing and supplying donated human skin for medical use.

• The Rs.6.75 crore skin bank will be inaugurated on July 15 at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.
• It has received regulatory approval from Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO).
• Donated skin will be collected from deceased or consenting living donors and stored under specific conditions for grafting.
• A second skin bank is planned at Kottayam Medical College, with burns ICUs already set up in multiple medical colleges across the state.
• The initiat ive will aid in reducing infections, preventing fluid loss, easing pain, and accelerating recovery for burn and trauma patients.
