The Vernacular Press Act of 1878, also known as the "Gagging Act", was a law passed by the British government in India to limit the freedom of the Indian-language press.
The act was proposed by Lord Lytton, the viceroy of India at the time, to prevent the press from criticizing British policies, especially during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–80).
