As a result of this ancient shift, a triangularshaped plateau was formed and characterized by curved hills, and channels. Although situated in western part of the peninsular plateau the Malwa plateau has drainage in both Arabian Sea (Narmada, Tapi, and Mahi rivers) and Bay of Bengal (Chambal and Betwa rivers).  Vindhya ranges runs parallel to the northwestern side of the Deccan plateau along with Satpura ranges that separates the Malwa plateau and Baghelkhand plateau from the Deccan plateau.
