    Champaran Satyagraha(1917)

    • Champaran Satyagraha was the first civil disobedience movement which was launched by Mahatma Gandhi.
    • It was done to protest against the injustice meted out to tenant farmers in Champaran district of Bihar.
    • During British rule, many tenant farmers were forced to grow indigo on some part of their land.

    Kheda Satyagraha (1918)

    • Kheda Satyagraha was launched on March 11, 1918, in Kheda District of Gujarat (the then Bombay province).
    • The movement was initially started by the peasants themselves with the help of a local leader, Mohanlal Pandya. It mainly involved the peasant-Patidar community of Kheda, which later involved the leadership of Gandhi.
    • Their demand was the non-payment of the revenue against the backdrop of crop failure, a rise in prices, and the government’s insensitive increase in the tax rate.

    Rowlatt Act Satyagraha (1919)

    • Rowlatt Satyagraha was a non-violent civil disobedience campaign in India led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1919. The movement was against the repressive Rowlatt Act passed by the British governmentto imprison Indian political leaders without trial.
    • The Rowlatt Satyagraha was led by Mahatma Gandhi and other Indian nationalist leaders, who believed in nonviolent protests as a means of achieving political change.

     Non Cooperation Movement (1920)

    • The Non-Cooperation Movement (NCM) was the first nationwide movement launched by Gandhiji in 1920 during British rule. It emerged as a powerful and fervent response to a culmination of grievances and disillusionment that had been building up among the Indian populace.
    • Rowlatt Act and the brutal Jaliawala Bagh Massacre were the immediate causes for launching the movement. 
    • Congress, at its special session of Calcutta in September 1920, approved the Non-Cooperation movement, which was later endorsed by theNagpur session of Congress in December 1920. The movement saw tremendous participation of masses throughout the country.
    • However, the movement was called off by Gandhi on February 11, 1922, following the Churi Chaura incident in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. 

    Note:

    • Mahatma Gandhi is the most acknowledged figure of the Indian National Movement as he specifically led non-violent civil revolts.
    • He initially operated his approach in South Africa where he was working as a non-native lawyer. Gandhiji was hurt and enraged when he noticed prejudices and exploitation of colored people under Whites’ authority.
    • Mahatma Gandhi came into the limelight when he arranged non-violent marches in the country which earned him fame and support from South African citizens.
