Study Notes

Consider the following statements and mark the correct one/s.

    1. Glaciers give rise to erosional features in highlands and depositional features in lowlands.

    2. The rate of erosion of  glaciers depend on geological structure of valley

    3. Australia is the only continent lacking glaciers.

    Correct Answer
    Explanation:

Glacial ice erodes and shapes the underlying rocks. Glaciers also deposit sediments in characteristic landforms. The two types of glaciers are:

    1. Continental glaciers are large ice sheets that cover relatively flat ground. These glaciers flow outward from where the greatest amount of snow and ice accumulate. eg: Antarctica and Greenland.
    2. Alpine or valley glaciers flow downhill through mountains along existing valleys.

Glaciers erode the underlying rock by abrasion and plucking. Mountain glaciers leave behind unique erosional features. When a glacier cuts through a ‘V’ shaped river valley, the glacier pucks rocks from the sides and bottom. This widens the valley and steepens the walls, making a ‘U’ shaped valley.

NOTE: Australia is the only continent without glaciers. Glaciers can only survive if the average temperature is freezing or less, so in warm areas they are found at high altitude. At low altitude they are only found in high latitudes. Glaciers are found at high latitude or at high altitude.
