Noted playwright, poet, painter and thinker Gieve Patel passed away at Cipla Palliative Care and Training Centre in Pune . He was 83.

• Patel had cancer and was shifted to the centre in Pune a few weeks ago. He is survived by a daughter.
• Born in Mumbai, Patel graduated from Grant Government Medical College. He gained fame in the artistic field with his contributions as a playwright, a poet and a painter.
• Poet Ganesh Vispute termed Patel’s demise as a big loss for the Indian literary circle. “He was a writer, poet and a great thinker. He was the torch bearer of the Modern India .
